For those seeking bolder flavor profiles, the Beef Tartare is a standout, presenting a softer, lighter texture that contrasts the traditional French style, paired thoughtfully with house-made breads. The rich, tender Stewed Oxtail and perfectly roasted duck infused with aromatic spices invite diners into an indulgent journey of umami and satisfaction. The tasting menu option is highly recommended for guests who want to savor a curated selection of the chef’s best creations, expertly balanced between traditional Japanese technique and innovative flair.

Complementing the food is a well-curated drink selection that enhances every bite. The crisp, vibrant 2023 Resma Sauvignon Blanc Vendimia Seleccionada pairs beautifully with sashimi and lighter dishes, while the diverse sake, Japanese whiskies like Miyagikyo and Yoichi Single Malt, and craft beers such as Orion Beer Okinawa’s Craft White Ale or the fruity yet balanced Dai Dai Ale offer options for every palate. Signature cocktails like the refreshing Berry Mojito and the intriguingly tart Salty Lychee Supreme Plum Sour add a playful, modern touch to the beverage lineup.

Guests consistently praise NEW RETRO for its effortlessly warm and friendly service, emphasizing the genuine kindness of the Japanese staff and the attentive yet unobtrusive hospitality that enhances the dining experience. The basement setting lends a sense of exclusivity and intimacy, perfect for those seeking a quiet yet vibrant night out, away from the bustle of Toronto’s busy streets.

The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, the staffs are friendly. Food wise the Obanzai 3 knids was ok (potato salad, quail eggs and garlic stamps); Kokoro (chicken heart) is very delicious and can be a perfect match for sake; the beef tartar is ok, different from the French version, this one is more mushy, and a bit lighter flavored (maybe a bit too light), the breads are just way too oily; the Yodare duck is pretty good, tenderness and flavor are on point; the Ryukyu (raw yellowtail) is superb, well marinated and the shiso is perfect match for the fish; the Kaisen Don is also delicious, expensive but very satisfying, though my friend finds the rice a bit salty. Overall very good japanese restaurant here, a bit pricey but considering the overall quality of the foods, definitely worth revisiting.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere here — cozy, lively, and full of authentic izakaya vibes. The service was friendly and attentive, and the Japanese staff were all very kind and welcoming. All the food we ordered was great — nothing tasted bad. There were many creative dishes that still respected traditional Japanese flavors and presentation. The only thing I’d mention is that all of the dishes were on the salty side. As someone who doesn’t drink a lot, I found the seasoning a bit strong, but if you enjoy drinks, it would pair perfectly. Overall, a wonderful experience and a great spot for anyone looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya in town!

The great thing about this restaurant is not all parties have to order the tasting menu. You can order it and get some extra dishes and share everything. The food was really tasty. My favourites were Wagyu course, hamachi and kaisendon. I’ll definitely be back to try next season’s tasting menu. Highly recommend this place.

This is the basement bar located below Zakkushi. It’s a much more intimate and quiet atmosphere than Zakkushi. The restaurant serves smaller, tapa style dishes and they also have many drink options (cocktails, sakes, whiskey, beer). Highly recommend the kimchi tomato and the Ryuku (grilled yellowtail). The kimchi tomato is really refreshing and not something that you would be able to find at other Japanese restaurants.

I found this place through an Instagram reel, and I’m glad someone posted about it because it is very hidden. We got one of the tasting menu for 2 people and I’m glad we were able to do that. I loved the little trio for the starter, I would say the veggies and the tomato kimchi were really unique and great. I also quite liked the egg dish as well. I loved the noodles we got, super unique and flavourful. The liver sashimi we ordered à la carte and it was interesting. Every dish was rather tasty and the vibes were cool. It was a great date spot!

What a hidden gem! Very cool, small intimate vibe and you can watch the chefs cook everything. The tasting menu was great value for $75. They allow you to do one order of the tasting menu and combine that with ordering a la carte which is a nice touch, so not everyone at the table has to do the tasting menu. Every dish was incredibly fresh and flavourful, especially the sashimi and kaisen don. The yuzu somen noodles and cha one mushi were also so flavourful. Service was very sweet and attentive. I'll 100% come back!

great experience! wandered in on a sunday night and was greeted by a chill, lowkey atmosphere with a classic throwback playlist in the background. big fan of the retro sound system. we had the duck confit, shishito peppers, and obanzai mix along with two glasses of shochu. the flavours were light, refreshing and balanced and everything was very satisfying. my only thing of note was that we did expect the duck to be a hot dish, but it was a bit cold/room temperature (still delicious!). the server explained the dishes well and was attentive without intruding. great place for date night or for casual conversation!

Had the pleasure of coming here to celebrate and OMG the food was incredible. The little shop instantly reminded me of Japan! A small cute space dedicated to simple yet delicious umami packed dishes. The service and overall vibe were amazing. It's the perfect spot for drinks and dinner with the girlies or even a cozy date night. I wouldn't recommend it for big groups since the space is quite small but for a more intimate setting, it's perfect. Every dish I tried was enjoyable but if I had to pick favourites, the beef tartare and steamed egg were the standout! What we tried: Obanzai 3 Kinds Beef Tartar Monkfish Karaage Cha One Mushi (steamed egg) Yodare Duck Kaisen Don Already can't wait to go back!
